…BUT it’s few and far between if you’re a parent or work in a school. One way I find some silence in my daily life is by reading or listening to books on tape.
My daughter recently said that her biggest fears are, ” wolves, coyotes, shots, and books on tape.” Which I think is a little over exaggerated, but humorous! When the kiddos are in the car with me I’m pretty good about turning off the radio and giving them my attention.
If it’s after school I always ask these four open-ended questions:
- Tell me something you learned today.
- Tell me something you did today.
- Tell me something you liked about today
- Tell me something you would change or improve on from today.
If I ask close-ended questions (“how was your day?) I get responses like, “good.” That’s it, end of conversation. So I seize this time alone with them to delve into their day and learn more about their world.
Now if I’m by myself, this is my chance to fill the air space however I want and books on tape is what I turn to 90% of the time!
Currently on Goodreads I’ve challenged myself to read thirty books this year. That’s a lot when the most down time to read is when I’m in bed and honestly, I can’t stay awake past 9 o’clock! If it weren’t for books on tape I would be in trouble!
Here’s a list of the books that I’ve read and (mostly) enjoyed so far!
This was a wonderful story about he real life Constance Kopp and how she becomes one of the nations first female deputy sherriffs. I was thrilled when I learned that there are two more books about Constance and her sisters. I can’t wait to read more about their lives! Goodreads gave this book 3.78, it received 5 stars from me.
You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott was a great book that often had you guessing what really happened and questioning what you would do in their situation. I’d find myself semi yelling at the book (on tape) because it was driving me crazy that the mom wasn’t more outspoken. Goodreads gave this book 3.47 stars, I gave it 4.
A really well written book about the war torn town of London during WWII and the individuals that are forced together and ripped apart during this time. Goodreads gave it a 3.8, but I enjoyed learning more about this time, so I gave it a 4.
Chilling. This book should be talked about more. I’m still slightly haunted by it, but that’s why I love Jodi Picoult books. She takes a different angle on a topic and adds her own interesting twist. I think she’s probably the best novelist of my time. Goodreads gave it a 3.93, I gave this book a 5!!
Nicholas Sparks is an excellent author, but his books kind of blend together for me. It’s seems like it’s always some wayward man looking for the right person in his life and they find each other in some North Carolina town and live happily ever after (once they get past some obstacle.) Goodreads gave this book a 3.8, I gave it 2 stars.
I love anything Janet Evanovich. Her books capture my attention, make me laugh, and they are books I just can’t put down! I’ve read every sing book in her Stephanie Plum series and I cannot wait for the next one! On Goodreads this book received 3.74 stars and I gave it a 3.
On Goodreads, Mindy’s book has received 3.84 stars. I love her humor on tv, but to me it didn’t come through in the book. I only gave the book 1 star.
Have you read any great books lately? I’d love to see what you recommend in the comment section below!
Enjoy the moment!
