Peace Rocks

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., day my family and I usually go for a walk at our local elementary school with other community members and friends. This peaceful walk is done each year to bring awareness to injustices that surround us- while choosing a cause to walk for that is close to our hearts. This year it was extremely cold so my family made the difficult choice to stay home. We opted to create peace rocks and spread a caring message that way.

We started by gathering nine rocks and washing them (so that the paint would stick to them.)

After they were dry, my daughter and I gathered the supplies that we were going to need.

Acrylic paint, paint brushes, and dried rocks.

We then painted each rock one solid color.

After about 30 minutes they were completely dry and ready for each member of the family to add their own personal heartfelt message to them.

I’ve seen similar rocks on various trails while I’ve been running. Upon spotting one I always stop, read them, and ponder their message on the remainder of my journey. I think that if enough people created these rocks it could have an impact on those that cross their paths and it’s such a simple act to do.

Our hope/goal is to take each of our nine rocks and place them at various locations throughout our city. I have a feeling that we’ll be creating more peace rocks in the months to come.

Have any suggestions on how to spread peace in your community? I’d love to hear about them in the comment section below!

Enjoy the moment!
