To celebrate the beginning of the school year we host a Back to School Bonfire. We provide ingredients for s’mores, drinks for the kiddos, glo-sticks for all and of course the bonfire and location. We ask that our guests bring a snack-y dish to share, chairs, and their own beverage of choice.
We generally get the party started at 7 PM. With a movie to be shown when it gets dark out. This year, since the number of attendees has grown into the 70’s, we also put out lawn games to entice the kiddos to participate in other activities.
As everyone filters in it’s a lot of running around and catching up. It’s a great time! Once the sun begins to fade we pass out glo sticks and encourage the kiddos to sit in front of our outdoor movie screen to watch a classic movie. We usually give each child some popcorn and gummy snack (or freeze pop) to make it more of an authentic drive-in movie feel.
When we choose our movies each year, we like to think of those epic films that we watched at the drive in when we were kids. Last year we showed The Goonies and this year was Back to the Future.
The kids really enjoyed it and most hadn’t seen this movie before so it was a new discovery for them. While they were enjoying screen time the adults were able to have quality adult time around the fire. It’s a win/win!
The party usually ends around 11 PM with sleepy kids and their parents heading home while looking forward to next year’s festivities.
Do you have any back to school traditions that you like to do with your friends/family? I’d love to hear about them in the comment section below!
Enjoy the moment!
